Combating Fake News, Deepfakes, Cyber Threats, and Building Media Resilience in India
The ISB Institute of Data Science (IIDS) and the CyberPeace Foundation have collaborated to understand & investigate some of the most critical challenges emerging in India’s digital landscape - ranging from Fake News and Deepfakes to CyberSecurity threats and the misuse of generative technologies.
This partnership brings together CyberPeace’s hands-on expertise in cyber safety, public digital awareness, and security advocacy, with IIDS’s deep research capabilities in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Data Analytics, and emerging technologies. The partnership aims to advance both technological tools and policy frameworks to strengthen India’s digital defenses and media integrity.
Key Pillars of Collaboration
This collaboration focuses on understanding how misinformation spreads, the risks posed by synthetic content, and the vulnerabilities in our digital systems. Ongoing research includes:
- Exploring various AI-powered systems to detect and flag fake news and deepfakes
- Investigating Cybersecurity risks tied to manipulated and synthetic media
- Exploring the misuse of Generative AI technologies in the creation and spread of disinformation
A nationwide series of Deepfake Detection and Cyber Awareness Workshops is being rolled out for journalists. The workshops are designed to:
- Train media professionals to identify fake news, deepfakes, and other cyber threats
- Introduce practical tools for fact-checking and content verification using AI and digital forensics
- Promote responsible and informed reporting on issues of cybersecurity and media manipulation
The partnership is driving broader public engagement around digital safety. Initiatives are focused on:
- Raising awareness on cyber hygiene and the responsible use of digital tools
- Educating the public about emerging threats and digital literacy
- Supporting conversations on Regulation, Ethics, and best practices in technology governance
The collaboration also supports policy-driven research and dialogue to help shape India’s response to the evolving digital threat landscape. This includes:
- Exploring the ethical implications of AI and Deepfake technologies
- Encouraging multi-stakeholder engagement to develop national strategies and legal frameworks
- Informing public policy on information integrity and emerging media regulation
